WEATHER
CONDITIONS
Weather conditions: |
| Ice on the Pechora river broke up in 1999 later than during the last 100 years (ca. 20 June near Naryan-Mar, 67ø38'N). Estimated 50% of snow-cover was reached on 18 June at 67ø44'N and on 25 June at 68ø46'N. The summer was late and characterised by reasonable air temperatures without major set-backs.

Breeding conditions:
| The area is very complex in structure and type of predators. Arctic Fox inhabits tundra, while Red Fox delta with bushes. Wolverine, Wolf and Brown Bear occurred in 1999. Arctic Foxes, lemmings and voles were all rare in 1999. By general impression predators determined breeding success in this area to a far lesser extent than further East. Prey abundance for raptors is less cyclic than it is known at Taimyr. Lemmings play a minor role, while Root Vole Microrus oeconomus does instead. Willow Grouse shows some cyclicity with 1998 being at a low. In a hilly area 1998 was peak year for Snowy Owl and Pomorine Skua, but this could be due to factors further to the East more than local factors. In 1999 these species were absent.

Summary
of fauna studies: |
| Only data on nests, inventory stopped before hatching/fledgling period. Our work concerns estimates of densities in relation to spatial characteristics of landscape and vegetation.
